Issue #12 of Midnight Street magazine is out, and includes my new story ‘The Crows.’ And it may sound from the title like a traditional horror tale … but it really isn’t.
Robert Morrish bought five stories of mine — ‘Yesterday, Upon The Stair,’ ‘Siafu,’ ‘A Place in the Country,’ ‘Misdirection’ and ‘Nine Rocks in a Row’ — during his editorship of Cemetery Dance, and I never once got to meet him. Now that he’s recently quit the magazine, I finally did. Bob was over in London on business from California, and we got together for drinks in Covent Garden before heading across for an Italian meal in Soho. Great guy … a real pleasure to spend time in his company. Writing’s not all hard graft, I’m relieved to say.

If you’ve noticed that this news page hasn’t been updated in a while, well, richardsreality.com suffered a major attack from cybergremlins around the turn of the year. They’ve now finally all been rounded up and put back in their cages by my excellent technical team, Marie.
The absolutely final draft of ‘Night of Demons’ is in, and my editor has approved it. A proposed cover — a genuinely superb one — has already been painted, the back blurb and other cover material is ready, and publication is scheduled for late October, just in time for World Fantasy, San Jose.

I am the featured author in the current issue of Black Static, #9. There are rave reviews by Peter Tennant of both ‘Dark Rain’ and ‘Shadows and Other Tales,’ and a lengthy interview with me, conducted by the same.

My story ‘Birchiam Pier’ is finally out in The British Invasion, the blockbuster anthology of British horror authors from Cemetery Dance Pulications (see Links). And a review on SF Site has already called it “by far the best story in the book.”

My editor at Eos has got back on ‘Night of Demons.’ And here’s her judgement: “I really enjoyed returning to Raine’s Landing, and think we have a great start here. And I particularly loved the ending — it’s so creepy and effective, and utterly pulls you into the story.” Which is exactly the kind of comment that I like to hear. I’m right now working on the very final draft.
Happy Holidays, everyone! This New Year, I’m off to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. You can see more on my blog, which can be reached via the home page of this site.
